Buhay Kubo

A rebuilding initiative for Typhoon Odette victims

Situationer

On December 14, 2021, Super Typhoon Odette (International name "Rai") stormed through the Philippines and made its 9th landfall on Palawan on December 17, 2021. It hit the northern parts of the island, leaving an estimate of 70-80% damage on infrastructure or about Php 7.8B.

Over 500 households in Brgy. San Rafael were affected by Typhoon Odette, with 223 totally damaged and 332 partially damaged homes (Data updated last January 11, 2022. Study conducted by A Single Drop for Safe Water and Roots of Health).

Displaced families struggle to get access to basic resources to help rebuild their lives. Some families who have lost their homes are using makeshift shelters from debris and waiting sheds.

The Project

Buhay Kubo aims to create a low-cost, more climate-resilient, and sustainable version of a “bahay kubo”.

The project will start in Purok Maligaya, San Rafael, Palawan and eventually move to Brgy. Langogan and further north. During the initial phase, we aim to build 12 houses which cost around Php 800,000 to Php 900,000 or $16,000 to $18,000

A replicable design and construction manual can be requested for implementation in other affected areas.
